Description

Xplrme Singapore brings to you the online tour of Sarnath – Land of 5 Disciples. Sarnath is one of the most important religious places for the followers of Buddhism.

Varanasi may be home to the most popular and ancient Hindu temples, but it also has the distinction of being one of the most sacred destinations for Buddhists too.

Sarnath, about 20 Kms from Varanasi, is where the Buddha taught his first few disciples. This sacred place, which Emperor Ashoka tried to immortalize by building the greatest Stupa, fell to ruins like many Hindu temples in the vicinity. However, archaeological excavations have unearthed what is left of them, and efforts are on to not only preserve the remnants but also to find out more details about them. Credit must certainly be given to the Buddhist Society, because of whom this site has been preserved as much as possible.

The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dhamma. This is where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.

Sarnath is easily approachable from Varanasi.

Sarnath, though geographically close to Varanasi is quite contrasting and does not possess the exuberance of its more famous neighbor. It is relatively peaceful and has many Buddhist temples, stupas, sculptures, and excavations of ruins. After attaining enlightenment, Gautama Buddha traveled to Sarnath. He preached his first sermon to his five companions at the deer park here. This stage in Buddhism is known as ‘Dharma Chakra Pravartana’ or ‘the turning of the wheel of law’. Sarnath forms one of the four major pilgrim destinations for Buddhists, the others being Bodhgaya, Lumbini and Kushi nagar. Buddhism and the preachings of Buddha flourished in Sarnath until it was attacked by the west asian rulers in the 12th century. The place remained abandoned till the 18th century when the ruins were re-discovered.

Hello, this is Mayank. Let’s go around and find out why this place Sarnath is so very special. Let’s take a look at its mesmerizing serenity and the Budhha’s temple.

The calmness of the place will not let you want to leave. To complement to this the lake near Sarangnath Temple tends to wash away the stress. I will make sure that I walk you around showing all places that shall give you an experience of virtual reality.
